CANTERBURY

Ann’s House

To Michael Curtis

eccentric –
that’s how you described it
– our four-day home

6am – awake since 3 –
in my hand a cup edged in summer
blooms affirms it is October – while

in other rooms – a similar cup
announces to the occupants they are
in a different month

the walls – hung with fancy plates
and rose-filled pictures – along
with the carpet curtains sheets

and bedspread
hold more flowers than
any meadow rambled

6am – even the birds still sleep –
as I sip the first of the coffees
that will punctuate my day
