ESOL class

Today just two women
Hoping – in vain – they will leave
At 12 – fluent as me.
The rain lashing the window
Fills the silence as I watch
One list things she’d like to…
The other attempt to write Tuesday.
Married at 12
When her first child moved
In the waters of her womb
She thought she’d swallowed
A frog from the well.
The woman who brought me into the world
Struggles to remember who she is.
